I think I found this in my mom's storage unit (I haven't seen it in a while & have seen so many other things since - not Alzheimer's!) - was this a advertising piece or did they sell gallon bottles of Jean Nate to women?
I've googled it but can't find another 1 gallon bottle for sale, advertising or anything else - help!
    Thanks

They did make store display bottles of perfume, but they did not contain the actual perfume. The liquid is made up of a colored liquid made to look like the perfume. They are called factices. Does this have the actual after bath splash? What is the bottle made of plastic or glass?

Good lord, can you imagine how long it would take to go through a gallon??

Who used it if it was advertising only? Or is this the result of loss due to long storage?

I remember back in the day when our local store sold perfumes, colognes and such (mom and pop shop) and they had very large bottles of items on the counter to draw attention.
    Perhaps that is it?

It probably IS a factice, but if not, I used to have a friend who would rejoice in a bottle of Jean Nate that size!! I'd give her four months with that thing!

I'm with Peggy - if the liquid smells like Jean Nate then it was meant to sell.
I had a half gallon bottle once. Just went to see if it was still under the sink and found a 30 ounce bottle of Jean Nate body lotion.

It could be due to evaporation. I found this explanation on-line.

"In the early days of factices, these might be filled with perfume, but as time went on, manufacturers began to use colored water, a type of colored antifreeze, a mixture of rubbing alcohol or formaldehyde, or glycogen is used in most examples. The colored water examples sometimes have some sort of sediment or flaky particles floating around in the liquid, this is most likely caused by bacteria or mold growing in the water. Some factices, such as those for My Sin by Lanvin, are hollow, opaque plastic bottles, with no liquid inside.

"The colored liquid for the factices often come premade in advance in aluminum containers when they are delivered to the department stores. Alternatively they might come as an extract in a small plastic bottle and the shop owner would have to mix it with distilled water."

    @KikoBlueEyes
Can you do a test on the Advertising Knife thread. I have an answer that it won't let me post.

Never mind. Now it is showing other responses from half an hour ago that weren't there.
However, I still can't post on it.

That is weird. Can you see the posts now? Perhaps it is corrupted. I can see three posts including ours. Now there are four.

I was able to find quite a few examples of the one gallon size online so I'm guessing it may have come in that size.

Here is one person's recollection of receiving one.

Holy Cow! This made me laugh so hard! We were “Primo Girls” in high school, too! In fact, 1 day, one of the girls in our class had a bottle in her backpack and it somehow broke. For the rest of the day, our hallways were permeated with the aroma, and you could tell in which classrooms she had been! Now, Jean Nate….. I received one of those HUGE gallon size bottles from the family that I babysat for while I was in jr. high and high school. Slightly (I mean REALLY slightly) less offensive!

If you ever stood next to someone who bathed in their cologne or perfume (I have) they would probably go thru this faster than could be believed. I can not believe how many folks don't know that just a dab is quite enough and instead use it like crazy. Ugh. Gives me a headache.

I remember the episode on Everybody Loves Raymond where his mother mentioned Jean Nate... funny stuff.

A one gallon bottle and they even boxed it! 1964 earliest date with the Lanvin-Charles of the Ritz association.
