Featured Painting Rescued From Barn -- How Old Is It?

nice painting....strong subject...well made......
the frame looks to me, older than the canvas....& while the paint cracking can be caused by several factors , including age......I'm having a tough time with this ....

The horse has the same facetious eye as my avatar I LOVE HIM!!!
The frame seems to be a marriage, the clue is the eyed screws placed to hang it vertical...

 

The label on the back is also placed as if the frame had a vertical orientation. I think both the frame and the painting look old. It may not be possible to tell their ages relative to each other. Paintings can sit unframed for years, and somebody could have grabbed an old frame and put it together with the painting at any time.

I like the painting a lot, and you did a good job on cleaning both the frame and the painting!

 

The photo of the edge of the canvas shows that it was "pre-primed" - prepared by a commercial manufacturer of artist's canvas. The priming layer extends to the edge of the canvas, and is evenly applied. Pre-primed canvas was commonly available in England and the U.S. by the 1840s.

 

Looks like like minds think together.......could be a date in there and/or some initials???
