What do you think? I think it's a maybe poster from 1880s. In oak frame, very old paper, hand made square nails, and I included a close up of his name, date. I picked this up at yard sale for $3.00. It came from an art sale in Ann Arbor, Michigan where a collector of this artist lived. What do you guys guess it could be worth? I sent this info to Christie's Auctoon House in NY, they said lovely decorative item, but not worth enough for them to auction. 1550552710987796.jpg 1550552710473790.jpg 1550552710748984.jpg 1550552710133799.jpg

I agree, it is lovely, and signed Godward '99, as cluttered said.
She can't see herself in the mirror though.

First off, a total deal at $3. Wow!

You have some info... you know it is less than Christie's minimum (what is that $5K?) so if you sell it, its not like you are accidentally letting go of a $200K item or something.

You didn't post measurements, but it looks like a larger piece. I guess if it was me, I'd keep an eye out for sold Ebay auctions as comparables. There is an Ebay one that sold stating it was from 1899 (that one was in color) and it appeared to be reframed in a more contemporary frame. They were asking $800, but accepted $400 for a BIN. I actually like yours a lot more more, but not sure how the market values colored prints vrs non-colored.

One tricky thing is that there are a zillion reproductions of his work. When you search Ebay under "Sold", one trick you may know, you can order from "Highest first" under "Sort" and this will bring up any older ones to the top of the list, since those would have a greater selling price. Not a whole lot of older ones on there under Sold right now --just the $400 one where they accepted a best offer.

Also there is a name for this kind of frame. (I want to say birds eye maple but I know that isn't it.) Maybe @verybrad or others might know.

    Hi,
Frame looks like tiger striped oak. it looks like a veneer. Would have to see the back to see if it matches or not.

Love the frame! And for 3 bucks, a great bargain, even if the print is not a big seller in this condition!

Circa 1900 arts and crafts style frame. Quartersawn oak veneer for sure. Often see this kind of thing in the $100.00 range if in very good condition. Think they usually end up selling for less but, at $3.00, a great bargain. The beading around the interior of the frame looks a bit incongruous in color. Has it been painted?

In taking a look at the close-up of the signature, I can see the beading better. Kind of looks like gesso that has been stripped. Since the frame has been refinished, would think this a distinct possibility. Really think it should be wood colored or perhaps a patinated gold.
