This painting caught my eye, and it was less than $10. It is unsigned, but had a note on the reverse dated 1971, sort of a dedication. Unclear whether it was from the artist or from the person who purchased it.

Does it merit further research? It has one big problem right from the get go, it appears to be glued to the backing paper.

    All thoughts appreciated.

I like it too. Is it sure that it is painting but not enhanced print?

When I first saw it (from across the room) I thought it was a print. But on closer inspection I could see it was painted. Would the painting be on top of the print? That would certainly explain the odd way it is displayed, glued like that.

Johnny, it has no smell whatsoever, but it IS dark. You are right about that. (Could be from smoke or dirt, I suppose.) I was in kind of a dark mood when I purchased it, probably why it spoke to me.

If it is an enhanced print, is this a known picture?

I've seen paper prints that has applied relief paint and then some kind of varnish on the top. But can't tell if this is the case here.
If you've taken it out if the frame you will be able to tell probably.

What does the note/dedication say? Maybe that is what spoke to you. Is it sad?

I have seen some paintings done like this..... Painted on illustration board and glued to mat board to give the illusion of being properly matted. Have seen it a lot with illustrations and architectural drawings so perhaps someone with this background would do this with other art. It is not exclusive to those with such background. I know of at least one well known artist that routinely glued his watercolors to cardboard backings. If the art is hopelessly adhered, you could always just trim off the excess and mat properly.

EW! Thwppppppatooey. Makes me ill when I find such a mess on something. :( My '68 Nova SS was so bad with it on the inside that I thought I would have to replace the entire interior. I got it from the original owner in '86 so 18 years of it. :(
Sorry for the dalliance though I like it but for that issue and maybe it was released on that backer so I suggest you be careful about removing it or not.
Anyone have a formula to remove nicotine from such things without damage?

Turns out there is no smoke or dirt on this, zero. I just took a white cotton rag, got it a tiny bit damp, and nothing came off on it at all. Not even dust or anything. I think either the color was intentional or maybe the varnish (if there is varnish) is giving it that look.

    I appreciate the comments.

    Hi Milt,
To remove cigarette smell from anything non washable, rent an ozone machine. I rented them when my church had a fire to remove smoke from antique vestments and books. I had a few small things at home, papers and silk etc. Put them all in a large box and ran the ozone machine tube into the box 24 hours later no odor anywhere. Have to confine the ozone since it will give you flu like symptoms and make you sick if breathed in.
