Age, what to call this Czechoslovakia glass set

What can you tell me about this set? The glasses and bottom faintly stamped "Czecho Slovakia". No markings on the decanter or stopper except both have the number "5".

Is this for brandy? Also curious about the age.

The glasses are so thin and light weight, they measure 2 1/4 inches high. Unfortunately two have rim chips, but that is the only damage on the set. Remaining glasses, decanter and stopper, and bottom tray seem good.

The decanter measures 6 1/2 inches to the top of the stopper.

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Probably pre-war

I'd call it a toasting set

Those tiny chips can be sanded out by the right person

What is with those trees? Someone posted pictures of oil paintings here lately, with huge tree trunks with no big limbs, just a bunch of spriggy, twiggy branches shooting out. Is it some European custom to trim trees in that manner?

Laura - Looks like that tree has been pollarded, a method of annual pruning. It's normally used to train a tree into a uniform rounded shape that will be the same size every year. Not just European because there are certain trees here that are pollarded too.

Thanks for the quick responses! Would these be hand painted? The general scene is the same on each glass, almost identical, but subtle differences. At first I thought it was some kind of transfer, now thinking they must be hand painted.

Look at them with a loupe and you can see brush strokes or printing dots for lithographing a decal

Nice set! The mark was used from 1918-1938, don't know if you will be able to find out what company made it.

I thought it looked hand painted, but as George suggested, check them with a loupe.
I just noticed there is a tray with this set, very nice! The number indicates the stopper is original to the decanter.

Thank you for finding the exact date range, CX. That fits with Terry's estimate. Much appreciated!

I am not seeing tiny dots, so this must be hand painted.

I also noticed that having the matching tray (stamped w/mark, too) is a plus. As I searched similar, it seemed like very few had a tray.

This was at the thrift store, unbelievably. I did a walk though, lately there has been ZERO. Was just about to leave and walked past the endless mugs and glasses, and here this is on the shelf.

I have photos of pollarded trees in the spring. Don't know why they do it, but they do.

Street trees are routinely pollarded here - they're London Planes or Limes, and if you don't pollard they are utterly thuggish. Cherries aren't pollarded, nor are red maples, as they're better behaved.

I'd like this set myself to give my son. He's getting to be as much of a collector as I am. :)
