Is that real jadeite or some other type of jade?

How can one tell what kind of stone it is from just a picture ?

 

I know, I should have never said that. Cheap string, so I suspect a cheap stone.

It kind of has a jade appearance but so do many stones. Maybe look up how to do a jade scratch test (it involves a knife so you could potentially damage it if its not jade, if that matters). Quality jade is usually set in high quality settings (high karat gold etc.). It can still be jade but the quality of it is probably produced for a tourist/asian shop. Hope that helps somewhat.

Edit - you may also want to try clapping the stones together, they should make a sharp glass sound when they hit.
