20190215_162313.jpg 20190215_162224_2.jpg Picked this up at an Auction for $22. Baby furniture isn't really my thing. So I bought it on impulse. Can anybody tell me about it. No signature

Good buy or no? Estimated Retail?

Looks like it rocks, so a cradle.

Agree, not a bassinet, a cradle.

    Looks late 1800s early 1900s.
Doll collectors like these. However, I think dolls are on the downside right now. They tend to go up and down more than any other collectible.

@Christmasjoy & I can't remember who the other doll collector is.

    Dangerous for a baby.

What is the wire mesh secured with, is that leather wrapped around?

Something like this would be illegal to sell at retail here in Illinois.

@verybrad Just curious - was the chicken wire original or a red-neck repair job?

Sorry for my lack of 'reply' .. I had company. I can't add anything to the proceedings as I know nothing about baby furniture or even doll beds, my dolls are either in glassed in cabinets or stored safely in my basement. Very nice little bed, though quite unsafe for a baby. Also .. WELCOME JD !!! .. Joy.

Begin as you mean to go on?:playful:
Maybe you could cover it with one of those safe covered foam cradle lining things. (You can tell I know all about cradles, can't you.;) )

    Hi!

I'm sorry that I can't add anything, except to agree with Cluttered that doll collectors loved items like that to display their antique dolls.

Agree on being a cradle rather than a bassinet. Looks to be late Victorian in style.

Not sure who would be interested if you were to offer it for sale.

If one side drops, one could easily clean it up and turn it into a mini sofa (with lots of padding) for small pets.

Could also be used for plants on a porch.....the mesh allowing for overflow of water.

    I like it.

Not really chicken wire. It is a metal mesh material often seen used as bed decking. However, in this case, I think it has been added in make-do fashion. If original, I would expect it to be attached to a drop-in framework.

Hard to sell. Not used for original purpose any more, so just an artifact for display. I wouldn’t have bought it for resale, but you can probably make your money back if you have time and someplace to display it. If it’s for your own use, then it’s hard to go wrong for $20 if you can use it.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Hi and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS JD!! Take 10 or so years off me and I’d probably clean it up, stain and varnish it, after I’d turned it into something artsy for fun!!!!! Something I would NEVER do to a Quality antique, but it just looks like a fun project.......I wouldn’t paint it, but there are those that could do a bang up job with that too!!!!! IMHO.......
