Ya, after you post......but not an hour after you post !

I can't say what the wood is , but from the base I see that core wood ( center of the tree) was used. As this piece ages, it should start to form cracks .
They're just beginning in the base , so I'd say this carving is recent....and from offshore.

I know that the body can be edited but I don't think the title can be?

This looks like the wood used in wood carvings from Bali. Although, most of their wood sculptures are polished more than your piece. Balinese Artists usually use, Teak, Jackfruit, Sugar wood, Bahulor or Baliwood.

So I guess it is not right to call him Native American. Just a native.

Am I the only one who thinks he looks more Mexican/Mayan/Aztec, etc.?

There were Native American nations who certainly wore those feather skirts. One of the Californian ones and some of the East Coast coastal peoples. I can't recall off hand which, but certainly some Virginia ones.

Could be, Bear. I think it's also something about the face, but I know next to nada about this stuff.

I agreed Bear. Also some on the east coast wore fronds, tobacco leaf, skirts. For the life of me, I can't find a pic now. I think???? I have seen tobacco store carved Indians in feather or/and leaf skirts. The only ones I can find today have the feathers or leaves over a fabric/deer skin skirt.

Those tobacco store NA were fantasy dressed and painted. The hair style doesn't look east coast Native American to me.

Wendy, you aren't the only one that is thinking Aztec, etc... I think the Aztecs were at times depicted with fronds skirts. I believe there are Spanish depictions of Montezuma in fronds, with over-the-top head gear. The sculptor may be trying to represent a common "Joe"/"José" Aztec or Mexican Native American.

The more I look at this, it looks more and more like an Apache hair style. They were noted for having a long hair style with only a band or scarf around their heads.

Nowwww wearing only a short skirt like this for riding a horse was let's say.... ouch! No doubt depicting a NA before the advent of horses to the Americas - before the Spanish. The skirt could be feathers, fronds, or leather strips.

The skirt is the least attractive part of the carving.
It's nothing..just a simple way to quickly carve that area and be dome with it .
