    Hello,
    IMG_5894.JPG IMG_5893.JPG
I recently purchased this worn / beat rug from an auction (price was right).
They said it was "asian" in origin.

I know nothing about rugs, and even though it's condition is atrocious, I figured what better way than to learn first hand.

Can anyone help me with this piece?

    Thanks in advance!
    Warm Regards,
    Scantic

Well, the overall impression is more of the "Persian" style or one of the -Stans, than "Asian" IMHO. But that stylized geometric flower design in the border (the bigger ones, not the small ones) isn't one I recall seeing before. With all the wear and fading, it's hard to tell whether there is any real abrash going on in the weaving.

Are either of the pictures of the reverse (underside?)

I believe they are both of the front. I wasn't sure if it was oriental or not, didn't look it to me. However, that is how it was described haha Not all auctioneers know their stuff though!

Can you take a picture of the underside?

Given the way the end you show is unraveling, I don't think there's much question about it having been handknotted, but it helps to see the reverse just in case.

I sure hope your idea of "the price was right" means they paid you take it away. ;)

Haha I wish they had paid me! But it was less than 5$ so it wasn't much of a risk. They have always seemed to pay off for me though. I've bought two other rugs similar to this before, both were in worse condition! And they sold for upwards of 80-100$. Don't ask me why.... I just put them up low and see where they go.

I'll try to get some pics of the entire thing and the backside in the morning. Hopefully the Sun will help! If there ever is sun... lol

Yeah, I guess $5 was cheap enough. ;)

    Who is "sun?"

Seriously, those extremely worn rugs work out just fine in the library under lamplight!

    Hi Silver,
Also bedrooms. The one I have now is so worn the cat does not want to walk on it anymore.

I passed up a rug like this at a yard sale because they wanted $150! It was actually in worse condition. I wanted to go back at the end of the day and offer far less, but we were driving home and I couldn't.

Arg watch for wool moths. I have a house full of old rugs, many that look like this and we are having quite a time at the moment with the little buggers.
