Hey guys! Today was a good day at the thrift store, found a few interesting pieces to add to my furniture collection. I was able to identify some, if anyone would like to add their feedback on what they think feel free to! Thank you!

Beautiful mirror, marked "Copyright Mcmlxiv Syroco 4910 Made In Usa" Looks vintage.
Purchased $6. Not sure what material it's made out of, but it doesn't feel like wood.

Tag labeled "Cabinet" not too sure what this was originally used for, maybe just storage. Can think of so many things to use this for and it's in great condition, thought it was beautiful. Purchased $15.

Round table, antique..vintage..material? No idea! But, I loved the details! Just needs a little fixing. Purchased $9

I've seen so many of these shelves with hearts at the thrift stores. I've bought a few different sizes. Are these considered 'primitive, folk art'? Purchased $6

I think syroco is a wood and plastic mixture. That mirror is probably 1940s-50s,pity theres parts missing around the edge. I think #2 is an 1980s cabinet from when country was all the rage.#3 I think is a reproduction, but close ups of the hardware and bottom of the table would help.#4 was also all the rage in the 1980s,it would have held your duck collection. I could be wrong so wait for others.

I think you're dead on. I remember those cabinets and shelves from the 80s. The table...dunno. It wants to be 18th century, but the finish looks a lot later and it's too absolutely perfect. I'd bet on 1920s repro instead of 1760s original, but I've been wrong before.

The Roman numerals on the Syroco label stand for 1964.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

It ALL looks pretty neat, but that tilt-top, bird-cage candle stand I’d bet my last dollar is a pretty recent Repro!!!!!

GOOD NEWS! You can hold onto your last dollar! :hilarious: It is indeed a repro but for $9, how can you go wrong?

Thank you! Ah, someone at the store told me it could be plastic that must be it! I didn't even notice that was a missing part, thought it was a part of the design but I see it now lol.

1980s country rage, nice to know and makes sense! Must have been everywhere back then, I'm always finding too many at the stores.

Thank you all who commented on the table and allowed me to figure out it's a repro! See, that's why you all are great! It didn't even cross my mind that it was a repro, I kept jumping at the store thinking "Whoa! Found me an antique table for $9"! Lol! I'd love to know how did you all figured it was a repro? Is it the hardware that shows could be holding the pieces together? I'll keep this in mind next time I'm hunting, it's always good to know how to spot reproductions!

Question about repros.. so basically, this would be considered an imitation of an original antique? Something that was recently designed perhaps even with different parts?

If I was to alter this and let's say paint it..how would I describe it? Would I still include the word vintage instead in the description? Or is it that with repros you never really know, because the parts could be actually new mixed with old etc?

Sorry for all the questions! Just trying to understand how exactly do repros in antique/vintage items work.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Anybody know how long Syroco was made? Just curious... I've seen the old bookends made of it, but had never looked into it. Bakersgma is right about the Roman numerals being for 1964.

"Syroco was founded in 1890 by Adolph Holstein as a family owned business focused on the production of decorative wood products (Syracuse Ornamental Company). In 1962 Syroco introduced decorative Wall Decor products molded in resin and began its resin Patio Furniture business in 1986."

    More information available on internet.

Thank you, Debora! For some reason I thought the material these things were made of was also called Syroco.

Syracuse University has some good, brief info about the company due to a collection they have. https://library.syr.edu/digital/guides/s/syroco.htm

Just the general appearance plus the $9. is a big tip off. These pics from another thread shows what a period (18th century) candle stand bottom should look like. Note the iron brace & the the legs dovetailed into the column.

Another thing, most tilt top period candle stands have scorch marks on bottom of top because, houses were drafty back then so it was common to put the candle on the birdcage & use the tilted top as a draft stop so the candle wouldn't flicker. Net result? bottom of top should have burn marks! :cigar:

I wouldn't paint it, most of the people in here are ANTI PAINT! and although i am one of the few who are PRO PAINT! :angelic: a painted candle stand would be weird.
Painted or not, it would still be called a tilt top candle stand. Just not period.

Thank you for all the great history information and photos, I enjoy learning something new! I can definitely see the difference, and it truly helps to understand!

Hahah! I bet most people are anti paint! I'm also in between, I love furniture in it's natural state, I like to see original detail especially if in good condition. Although, I've also seen some very nice painted furniture. You're right though, I tried picturing this in a different color and it was quite odd.

Heres the conundrum...if you were wanting to resell it as is ,it'd probably sit forever. Brown furniture is in a horrible slump and I see no end in sight. Sad but true. Now if you took this pefectly lovely table and had it powder coated in a glorious pink,it'd FLY out the door. I offer this opinion as a 40 year aficionado of decorating mags and shows. Dont shoot the messenger ! :)

I have sold some Syroco items.. I believe most were big keys in black or gold to put on walls.
    How groovy.
    Nice finds OP

Exactly what I was thinking and possibly the main reason why I was considering painting it, if I were to not keep it for myself and perhaps resell it. Especially with all the furniture flippin' that's in vogue nowadays, I've seen how wild some people go for painted furniture.. especially those with brown wood color on top, and a white finish bottom (like the photo below).. or like you mentioned something glorious and pink, lol. Now that I found out it's not an original antique, I'll think about it.
