Asian figurine - Chinese? Japanese? Southeast Asian?

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by Mama's Stuff Vintage, Feb 3, 2019.

  1. I inherited this figurine from my parents who inherited it from my paternal grandfather.
I love it - wish it had hands!
I've posted it on other sites but no one knows where it originated.
Can anyone assist me? Thanks :)

It is Chinese and represents Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of mercy. She is in fact the Chinese version of Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who is male.
Pity about the hands, those are the most fragile part, so are often damaged. She has a lovely face though.

A Boddhisattva is an essence of the Buddha. Each Boddhisattva has specific properties.

    Does the head move?
We have several German and English pieces where the heads and hands move. We always called the bobblers but I'm sue there must be an official name.

  7. Thanks for your opinion. However this figurine has been in my family since before 1950.
