Hi Milt,
So much of the original SS U.S. was auctioned off in the 70s and 80s. I had a phone from a state room and still have an aluminum chair from one of the lounges. The china and holloware pieces went for tremedous prices.

I am 13 miles from Atlantic City and about an hour from Cape May and an hour from Philadelphia. I treasure hunt in both directions. I am expecting to see a lot of yard sales, tag sales, and estate sales due to the closing of many casinos here. Pretty cutthroat here, I have my best luck at antique shows, antique malls, church sales, and small outside venues. Yard sales are tough here. Last church sale, a lady set up with all kinds of great stuff, don't know if she had been a dealer. Kicking myself for not buying a 10k Georgian flat garnet brooch for $65, but not too hard, it didn't "speak to me," if you know what I mean. I used to really find great stuff at the Berlin Auction, but that is very cutthroat, too. I just go now for the fresh air, the lemon water ice, cider donuts, and the hot dogs with fried onions. Oink!

 

Your find reminded me of this.

The USS Salem is moored just a short distance from my home. I took this picture in 2012 from my canoe the week after we went on board. We were the only people there. When we were leaving, I spoke with the guy in the ticket booth about the poor condition on the outside. The inside was still in great shape. He said the "old timers" from WWII were getting to old to volunteer or they passed away and the younger generation doesn't care.

I think it's an important part of history and it would be a shame to have it become a reef somewhere. Inside, everything is set up just the way it was, the sleeping quarters, laundry, hospital, mess hall, etc. Plus they have some great displays. They rented it for overnight camping to Scouts and schools but it still didn't raise enough money to keep it up.

They closed it 2 years ago when they closed the commuter boat terminal at the other end of the pier because the pier and pilings were declared unsafe. It will be moved temporarily to Boston but I think it's future is questionable.

Can't imagine how much it would cost to build one of those tall ships today with all the beautiful details and the gold leaf.

Forgot this little powder jar/dresser box I think it's case glass, seems well made....smooth base with a small lip looks like blown glass

I like the copper lamp sharona! The dresser jar looks like spatter glass, maybe Czech? I'll have a look in my books tomorrow.

I think your Weller-ish vase may be Hull, though there are some MIJ vases that are nearly identical. The Japanese ones are thinner and of a more white clay.

I believe the little cream pitcher is part of the Brush Pottery, Moderne Kolorkraft line.

Your green majolica plate is English, possibly Minton, mid 19thC. I see a lot of those - they sell well in sets, so I pick them up whenever I can as odds.

Spatter glass indeed. I suspect 1950s from the colour. Might be czech but their spatters are much brighter.
