    Hi everyone!

I've posted this is metalware. I don't know if it could be silver or silverplate. There are some marks and writing but I can't read Chinese or Japanese if that's the case.

Im not familiar with the box shape, the only two circumstances were in a knife box and a letter/document holding box.

Thanks for any help in advance

Pretty sure Japanese silverplate. Size? Looks like it could be an odd form cigarette box.

    Hi,
The one item I always wanted was a set of knife boxes. Never ran into one that I could afford. Closest I came to a set was at a flea market. I almost had a fatal heart attack. I saw them and the price was 100 bucks for the pair. As I rushed over to nab them, the woman who was selling them was putting them into her car. A woman 15 minutes before I got there had purchased them.:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops: After my heart attack I really began to cry.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Size would certainly be helpful, but it looks to me like a Japanese tea caddy in the form of a knife box - novelty tea caddies, thimble boxes, needle cases, etc., most often British, were produced in the shape of knife boxes, in wood, silver and other materials. This piece appears to be antimony, plated with copper, then silver plated, would guess dating to the late 19th - early 20th century...

I thought about tea caddy but thought it might need to seal tighter than this appears to. A lot of conjecture here. Really need the OP to come back and communicate.

Haha. I'm back. Nice job with all those examples @DragonflyWink. A few of them all mention it being a tea caddy in knife box form. So it's clearer now that that is going to be what it is.

Also @gregsglass, your passion is endless. You should write a book about your antiquing experience

Again, perhaps you might share the size with us - a tea caddy would be relatively small, a biscuit bin larger...

Japanese. Trademark similar to that shown in 4th row, 5th column, probably described exactly on previous pages of this site, but I’m required elsewhere and can’t look.

Lozenge/diamond shaped marks are very common on Japanese metalwork, with numerous variations - unless the pictures are extremely misleading, this piece is not a tin...

Seems like some ass-sumptions there, butt I won’t go there, maybe just wonder if a tin toy maker would never, ever make this object, or v/v?
