    Hi,
I have this chandelier, the porcelain (hand-painted design) makes me think it is from France. From the looks of the wiring this has be re-done, would this have originally been electric? This is 15" H. I need help on descriptive words for this.
    Any info appreciated!
    thanks for looking. DSC02786.jpg DSC02785.jpg DSC02787.jpg DSC02793.jpg DSC02802.jpg

I agree that the porcelain embellishment is identical to late 19th C French clocks, so it is almost certainly French and also converted to an electrolier at some time. If it had been made to be wired it would have had hollow arms.

Is it bronzed/gilt spelter, or gilt bronze that is very dirty.

(BTW, is it possible to teach an automatic spellchecker anything? I have never seen one that recognises the word 'spelter'.)

These things can be cleaned up in a bath of very strong ammonia, liquid soap and hot water. Do it outside, downwind, and use about a quart of ammonia to a half pint of washing up liquid and a gallon of boiling water.

Thanks af! I'm always hesitant to do much cleaning other than dusting to things in case I do some damage, but maybe will try with this.
So originally this would have been for candles?
    spellchecker drives me crazy!
