Horsehair would be a good bet - strong and thin enough to do the job. It would have taken a long time for it to break down.

    These finds were around $300...

Early-20th C. Latin Post-Impressionism oil on canvas portrait w/original carved wood Spanish frame.

Chinese 20th C. Yixing vase (we're keeping that, not for sale), 19th C. Tibetan gilt-copper something (not sure what these rectangular items were used for, they have two different mythological creatures in repousse on each side and are inscribed throughout on all four sides), 19th C. Chinese Canton enamel seal paste box, late-19th/early-20th C. Chinese famille rose dish and pink glazed incised dragon dish ($0.50 each :D) and the last two items I believe are mid-century Japanese something (have no idea what these items are).

Hello! This is my first 'find' post. It is not from a g sale, etc. but from a co-op antique mall two blocks away. Since I collect navy items I spotted this ship but knew it wasn't our navy by color unless it went back to the Great White Fleet era. Since I'm mentioning this there is still one of those ships in existence (I'm SO glad of it). It is no other than Admiral Dewey's flagship the USS Olympia. (see pic) You can actually stand where he stated; "You may fire when you are ready Gridley." She is docked at Philadelphia with a WWII sub, the USS Becuna, alongside. They both need our help along with the USS NJ across the river. I have been aboard all and suggest you visit them all as well as the amazing maritime museum near the USS Olympia.
Turns out my find is a wooden, hand-made model of only one of the 2 Revenge class British battleships/battlecruisers actually built in 1916 and scrapped in 1948/49. I'm sorry the overhead photo is fuzzy. I need to re-shoot that. Considering her age she is in great shape and easily restorable though I don't know when I will do so.... She is about 30" long. Price? They were asking $80 which is a deal to me for you don't see such things often. I made an offer of $50 including tax and they called me the next day. :woot:

    Hi Milt,
I used to visit the Olympia a lot when I lived in Philly. Two years ago they were trying to raise 2 million for her restoration or she would be scrapped since
it was so rusted the Navy thought she would sink and cause problems with the waterway. Baltimore has a WWll sub, the USS Torsk. I was on her for 6mos before she was retired. I was planning on taking my nephews to go see her but
I just might take them to Philly instead and show them the Becuna. A lot shorter trip. Congratulations on your model. My church in Brooklyn had 4 WWl wooden ship models hanging as memorials. Three of them were stolen and the fourth was so damaged in the fall that they left it. The NYC Seaport museum repaired and restored the ship at no cost if the church let them make other models and sell them.

Did they work that out with the models?

Thank you for your service aboard. :)

Yes. The Olympia is in great trouble. :banghead::(:grumpy: I personally think she needs a cofferdam around her, cradled/supported somehow then drained. There is nothing like her in the entire world. Don't expect a single designated penny from the clownfarts in 'my' capital city of Olympia.

Please take them to see all three ships and the museum but ships first for the museum is huge. Then all of you tell everyone of it. Maybe there are some $ out there for their care. Had I hit that 588 mil Powerball there is no doubt. :)

KingofThings, DH and I visited the Olympia in 1986, and when I told DH about your posting(s) on the Olympia he immediately said "I stood in the brass footprints on the bridge of the ship commemorating where Dewey stood to give the "fire when you are ready Gridley" command. DH said it was the high point of our trip to Philadelphia and he remembers it vividly after all these years.

DH says it shows a view of shipboard life in those days that he hasn't seen anywhere else and everyone needs to see it. He can't believe they would let it rot away.

YAY! Indeed and I've stood there as well! Amazing thing for me to do. I didn't know that was on my bucket list for I didn't know she was even there! It is beyond comprehension this lack of care would be allowed to happen. :banghead: Afoot is some effort to bring the USS NJ to Liberty Park on the Hudson by the Statue of Liberty. Though I understand Camden is much better than it was she's not getting enough support there.
If the others aren't getting what they need as well perhaps they should all move to Liberty Park. Relocating the sub USS Becuna there may hurt the submarine USS Ling's visitation where she is moored in the Hackensack river but she needs help too so....
The Oly could be moved by barge just like the USS Cole was after she was attacked in Yemen. :(
Also languishing and waiting to die at Philly is the liner SS United States> http://www.ss-united-states.com/ :(
