My friend just inherited this from his Grandmother. He thinks she brought it back from a month long tour of Asia back in the 70's. She sent back crates filled with things like this and furniture. He thought it was China. I haven't seen it in person. It's about 12".

I've looked on Gotheborg. I didn't see it under 20th century Chinese marks. So far no luck in the antique marks. I'm going to Japanese. I flipped the mark because I was not sure which way is up. Is this Chinese or Japanese? Has anyone seen this mark before? He doesn't want to sell it but he would insure it if it has an value. Although, I bet he would if it was enough to retire. :p Thank you.

It's Japanese, try checking the Satsuma marks at Gotheborg.

With that top mark it could also be a Kutani mark.

Thank you Susan. Nothing matched under Satsuma so I've looked through all the Japanese marks on Gotheborg and I haven't found it.

I don't know anymore about these marks then what's on the Gotheborg.com and the gbouvier.com sites. There is a chance these marks are of an individual decorator and not of a factory?? Taking your 1st close-up pic of the marks, the bottom mark/character looks like the Ga mark for painted.
    - Ga (painted)

Look under the 2nd section, "2) Meiji period 1869-1912", about the 7th short paragraph down in that section for the "Ga" character.

On the same site you might look through the following pages. I skimmed through them not seeing yours, but then I did it quickly:

    http://www.gbouvier.com/Seal/seal_marking.php

I'm not a member soooo can't get into the site's extensive database of markings. Hopefully one of oriental guru's will come along with help in a day or so.

What a great website. Thank you. I did go through quickly. When I have a chance later, I will take my time and see what I find.
