It is 5.5" tall by 12" in diameter and weighs exactly 6
    pounds!

I realize that this is a long shot, but does anyone have any
insight into this large bowl? It is crafted of thick pottery
with what appears to be under-glaze painted decoration and (once
had) thick gold trim on the rim. The flowers give me a
1930's vibe, but i am sure it is older than that. Now it is
faded and has a LOT of crazing. The foot ring (?) is rather
    rough and unglazed.

It was used by my father and his mother before him as a
punch bowl for eggnog - Gram said that eggnog looked
like mucus when served in glass, so pottery was the only
way she would serve it. And in reality, the bowl looks a bit
fancy to have been designed for utilitarian kitchen
    purposes.

    Any thoughts? MVC-169S.JPG

Looks to me as if it originally lived on Milady's wash stand -- especially given the weight.

Incidentally, your grandmother must have been one fearless and succinct lady! You have mentioned her before (chuckle, chuckle!). She should have had my mother-in-law's recipe!

MIL's egg nog was created and then poured into a monstrously heavy, cut-up-the-wazoo crystal bowl. Then meringue was added, about five inches of it. More was made as needed, because each cup contained a giant dollop on top. The egg nog itself was strong enough to make one gasp at first taste (then, smoooooth!)

I will never forget the first time I tasted it. My MIL came into her guest room at 7:30AM on January 1st, and, loudly and oh so cheerfully, announced, "Wake up, wake up!! Happy New Yeah, and here's your egg nog! Drink up, drink up, honey."

    MIL is southern.

I think this is too deep - steep sided - to be a wash bowl - not enough room to get your hands in it.

After seeing that photo, a pedestal seems likely - though I don't remember one in the past 65 years that I recall this being used. That would explain the odd footrim, and the sizes seen to line-up as well. The top rim appears the same - even the heavy crazing looks the same!

    You all are probably correct.

Although it might have been designed to sit in one of those washstands with a hole in the top?
