My Mom used to throw out my ( to her...) old stuff......and fold my t-shirts.....

This gal is just being a mom to those who have forgotten how to take care of themselves...

My problem is none of my clothing really gives me joy, except a few old sweatshirts. I always have to settle for what I can find that fits. Add in the fabric sensitivities etc and ... yeah well. Good luck finding womens' tall sizes retail.

No too people alike. Some have zero problem with this kind of thing and others could use her services.

Someone like my mother would never have needed this program. I love my mom dearly. She kept on top of everything, house immaculate, no clutter. Everything in it's place.

But she gave birth to someone who can attach an almost human like association with certain items, esp. clothing. This complicates things. I mentioned my success in releasing 3 clothing items from my closet using the "spark joy" trick last week. What I could not donate was a sweater I have not worn once in the last 20 years. 30 years ago I looked great in it, and it was my favorite piece in my closet. I even remember all of the details in purchasing it with great fondness and how it came to be a beloved piece of clothing.

But it is ridiculous that I feel like I cannot get rid of it. It doesn't even really fit and I should want to get rid of it. It's taking up valuable space. Does it spark joy?

Every time I have to push it aside to get to something I DO wear, it reminds me (ever so gently) that I am a failure in this one small way. No, it doesn't spark joy.

Okay, I'm gonna do it, lol! ....For Marie!

    Yes, the other Marie. :)

And I thanked it for being a wonderful sweater as I put it in the donation pile.

Call me crazy, but thanking it felt good.

I almost never wear sweaters.....but have and have had many supremely nice ones.
    One.... Aussie wool.....with koalas all over it....bought 40 years ago.....hardly worn...expensive...........
Just looking at it ... gives me a smile !!!

Again...I could give it away in a flash......& it would be cherished or up on eBay in a week.................
    But again.................it's mine...& it'll stay mine till I'm in the ground !

    Kondo........is just for kids with Condo's !!

That's awesome that it actually felt good! And now someone else will enjoy it.

I saw her book when I was starting to clean out boxes I had stored away 20 years ago. It also coincided with my sister helping my mom clean out their house for her to move into assisted living, in another city too far away for me to help out. But the thought of leaving a lot of things that my children don't want but would have to go through was enough to get me doing the same. And her book helped.

I then found another book soon after, again at library, this time by a Swedish woman, about cleaning out specifically before you die. They even have a word for it: Dostadning. That was helpful as well!

I still have most of the things I sorted through, however, because they are items I bought in my 20s/30s from church/thrift stores, old then but not antiques, that I now see in vintage stores. And plenty online as well, which I don't want to do. It's been a quandary to say the least what to do with it all. Last decision was to wait for spring and a garage sale. We'll see if that holds. :) I look forward to finding out how it'll feel for that last 'thank you and goodbye'. I think it's going to feel great.

One step forward, one step back, all I could think of was how much I'd that I'd like to go to that garage sale, lol.

(But for resale, ;) not just for personal acquisition.)

Or the cat. Genie the Houdinicat was named Genie Joy when I found her. Don't let the cat hear you call something by her original name. She is the Queen of Cats, and I"m more wary of a cheesed-off cat than some monstrous things that might not even notice.

I have seen her on some tv spots (I don't have Netflix) and she seems nice.
As Peggy said, I have a lot of glassware that is going nowhere as it is a joy.

But come spring time, I am going thru my closet and going to donate some clothes that have been hanging around for too long and I never wear them.
At this point they are vintage but I hate selling clothes online.

I haven't seen any change in any of my thrift stores. Same old same old.

I go through my selling stock at the beginning of each new year and weed out things I have been carrying for years that have not sold. For jewelry I make lots and sell them on eBoo, everything else goes to the thrift store. It helps to do it every year, it becomes part of my closing out the previous year when I start the new year's bookkeeping and get my taxes ready.

I just today finished his Diary of a Bookseller and then was looking at The Bookshop facebook page, saw this and of course had to post. I can't understand what he's saying, however, but I'm guessing based entirely on what I just read, roughly 300 pages of relentless disgruntlement and lackluster daily life at being a bookseller that he no longer feels one spit of joy in all he's got to deal with, thus deftly negating any use Maria's book might have, not even worth a serious look see. But I could be wrong.

Am I the only one who had to google to see what a Marie Kondo was?

The nearest thrift gets tons daily. Doubt it has anything to do with this. Most just goes on containers overseas for 14 cents a pound. The lame crap gets put out for resale.

I was at a local Half Price Books location on Saturday and was talking to an employee who said that in the past few weeks they have seen 20-30% more people selling. Behind their buy counter they had nearly 8 foot tall stacks of boxes of books/dvds/cds/records that they had been sold in the past few days. The employee said that there are having to send more to warehouse space since they don't have room for it all in store.

This is the first I have ever heard of this and I am like most other people here. Nope not going anywhere. I have 4 closets full of clothes a lot of them bought 10 to 20 years ago and rarely worn if ever. And yep keeping all of them. Same with my junk. This last week I have been cleaning out the barn for more storage note animals have never been kept in the barn at least since 1940s. That how long the house has been in the family. Although as I have been cleaning it a lot of the stuff has been coming in the house forgot how much cool stuff I had stacked out there.
