Mother Lode ! Dave, not trying to cut into yr business (and I'm 5-6000 miles away). So when you clear a house,do some families/heirs want to do a 'pre-pick' and the rest you can keep ?

This one the Family have been picking through for 2 years, it got a bit overwhelming for them as it was piled high and they were walking on the stuff.
They paid me to clear the rest. and I keep what I find.
I took 3 tonnes to the waste plant though.

It doesn't sound like the easiest pickin' on the planet-more like cross between forensic science and a quite stinky mosh pit.Jesus, bit messier than a boot sale in Chelsea !

I went to price one up yesterday, it was friends brother that died, it was a 3rd floor bedsit apartment in the city.

I knew the guy and only spoke to him 6 months ago.

What the friend did not tell me was his brother probably died in August and was only just discovered last week.

He had laid on the kitchen floor for 3 months.

The place stunk and I could see an imprint of the decomposed body on the floor.

Not my type of job, I've advised him to get specialist trauma cleaners in.

Davey's been at it again. One thing - I'd check over those gold rings. The one on the bottom left looks like rhinestone from here. The setting is all wrong and I think I see paint on the stone.

Its 14k CZ, they are all from Singapore as are the pearls, east and south east Asia.

I am a pearl afficianado....I don't think those are Tahitian pearls, I think they are freshwater pearls. I do own a Tahitian pearl ring. I have many similar freshwater pearl necklaces with 14k clasps.

The haul is amazing, and you are my idol for being able to have the patience and fortitude to do those cleanouta and the sorting.

I'll bow to your expertise, I've never recovered real pearls before and did some quick research comparing them with these
    3rd pic down.

The deceased were based in Singapore in the 50s and 60s and most of the valuables were from there or countries nearby.

Some freshwater pearls are nothing to sneeze at. For reference only:

The one pearl bracelet, potato pearls, is modern. It uses that plastic wire/string.

If I find pieces like the bracelet going cheap, I break them up and restring. They aren't highly valuable. (I didn't think to comment on the pearls.)

Speaking of going cheap... Here are some lousy shots of some things I got this weekend. Turned in the scrap on the way home, so was out of pocket $25 for these and the jewelry not pictured. Most of that was broken beads, but pre-1950 beads. I had a PILE of hand-blown glass ornaments that were $20 but as I was going to pay I realized my car keys had gone missing. (false alarm - after looking all over house and grounds i found them in the wrong pocket!) A gentleman walked up and was really checking them out. Turns out his nice had broken his entire box of Christmas bulbs. I relinquished the set to him, and he paid the $20 instead - a screaming steal, but I didn't need them and he did.

It was a great sale for me; I got there before they were going to open, but they'd already let one or two people in. We all knew each other, and none of them was the nasty lady from the other week. (woot!) The sale wasn't advertised too well and I think she plain missed it. Anyhoo... THe watch is Waltham; I bought it for the photo glued inside. THe back unscrews with the watch info back there. The watch fob is gold-filled. The ring was just sort of thrown in. I found it covered in LIPSTICK of all things. Cleaned it up - gotta be Navajo. The glass vase is signed; he's American, still active. Loren Chapman. The elephant is Viking - signed. I could have gotten more, but couldn't carry it. THe little elephants were bought at random; they're cute, but molded. The vases have a little damage on them but they're 1930s is cinnabar.
