Featured G. Silver 1908 pat. thimble holder case

Hello, all! Had no idea there were more responses here -- seem to get intermittent notifications, just stumbled on it now.

What AMAZING research INH and Fig. Even finding the maker and patent. Wow. Everyone here is the best!



Actually when I saw this box my first thought was that it was a ring box. Was so surprised when there was a little thimble in there.

So, a bit of an update with the tarnish. With a gentle bit of simichrome polish, the tarnish disappeared to a mirror shine. I didn't do the whole thing, but someone with more time will be able to. I just the top, and even left the center feature and sides undone.

Dang this was hard to photograph. This has a reflection of my red shirt and part of the ceiling. It's actually shinny all around the center. I'm going to need to get a better shot with no reflections, but you can see the big sections of tarnish on the top are gone.

 

The Simons thimble is most likely not sterling. They usually marked the sterling ones as such.

 

Did some research about the mark after I found it. According to the sites I checked, Simons Bros thimbles did not always have the word "sterling". Can't always believe what is online, but this google site shows an example of the stamp without the word sterling:

Here is one currently on Ebay w/bids, soon to close. Has an identical mark to mine without the word sterling that the seller says tests as sterling:

But good point, and thanks for the head's up. I have to say, it does feel like sterling in the hand, but probably good to test to be sure. Thanks.

The mark on the one I have, more of a single line S, not sort of an outline of an S, seems to be shown without the word "Sterling" in the few examples I've run across. However you do always see the word Sterling on the other variations of the Simons mark, sometimes inside, sometimes on the outside, at least from many thimbles I looked at in the last couple days. Maybe the earlier ones didn't have the word Sterling or maybe some did and some didn't even. Interesting learning about this!

The seller on the 2nd link above has great pictures if you scroll down, and seems to only sell antique sewing, kind of amazing to see her inventory. Her profile shows 20K positive FB, mostly as a seller, of antique thimbles and similar.

 

I can assure you your thimble is Silver...
I have Simon's Bros. thimbles with that mark and also with a double line across the S and they are Silver.
Basic Simons Bros. Nickel silver thimbles are marked SBC inside a thimble under the apex.
I have a huge collection of antique thimbles and I still have yet to find a Simons Bros. scenic thimble so that should tell you how nice yours is.
By the way not always marked Sterling.
