I just found this ring inside one of my relatives belongings ( that I packed away 10 years ago :shame:). Looking around, these were the two stones that I thought were the best match. Next to a 1 ct. diamond, it appears to be at least 4 ct size or larger. I can't read the mark next to sterling. I darkened one of the photographs to see if it would help. Thank you. It looks like either glass or some cognac quartz.

I'm not familiar with cognac quartz so I just went to Google. It looks much darker than this, even the lighter pieces that I saw. I suppose it could be glass.

Next week is busy but maybe the following week I can get to the jewelers. I also found three 18kt gold rings with stones, one 14kt and an 18 kt gold cameo bracelet. I've had this stored away since I packed up the house and never went through the stuff as I was packing. I wonder what else I'm going to find?

I'd be wondering about synthetic sapphire too, and maybe scapolite. I had to go digging for the latter. There's no way to really know without testing it, unless you see air bubbles under a loupe.

What would a bubble or two prove, quartz has bubbles.

Cognac is a fake/misleading trade name for some diamonds and quartz stones.List of other trade names..... https://www.gemsociety.org/article/list-false-misleading-gemstone-names/

Very nice ring, Mill Cove, great colour.
With a stone like that set in non-designer sterling my first thought is glass, but I have seen rather chunky facet cut gemstones set in sterling before. Do you know anyone with a gem tester?

The mark is something &L I think. I don't think it's citrine, it's too vivid.

I may as well pile on. Doubt it's anything obscure or highly precious. A jeweller examining with a loupe may be able to see features we're not able to pick up from the photos that will support or refute what I think are the two most likely possibilities, glass and citrine. If citrine, really a treated amethyst. Testing can distinguish between glass and quartz. I was trying to make out the cut. Looks like old European rather than brilliant, but was getting dizzy trying to sort out facets.

The stone is dirty and hard to say what the cut of the stone really is.The second photo ring laying down appears to have an enlongated bubble above the center prong.

Thanks everyone. I don't see any bubbles, however, I do see some tiny specks. When I bring the other pieces to the jeweler, I will definitely ask him to look at this. Since it was with the other 14 & 18 kt. rings, I thought it might be a real stone. I will let you know whatever it turns out to be.
