Hi, i acquired this item the other day at a local thrift shop. It measures 24 in tall. It has an oil painted scene on the front. I was wondering if anyone knew what this was? I couldnt find anything similar online. Also has a sticker on the bottom that reads "made in west germany" The top part comes off as well. also how old? If anyone has any info that would be great thanks!

age is a bit complicated. 1945 to 1949 "made in US zone". then the hoolabaloo starts...:)
companies that wanted to sell to US personel and army people kept the "US zone" to make their new "friends" feel more at home longer than factories that wanted to sell on the open market, sometimes well into the 50s.
after 1949 they were free to use Made in Germany/West Germany/Western Germany/W.Germany as they please, BUT a simple Made in Germany was scarcely used to show that the products didn't come from the Soviet zone.
legislation discussions about Made in Germany started in 1973 only and the high court in the west ruled against the producers in the west that had asked to prohibit the marking of GDR products as Made in Germany; it had to be accepted that the east marked as Made in Germany as well - which was logic because the goal of a re-united Germany was standing against it.
comes another thing to think about. when were those stickers showing up ? in my experience not before 1953 - 1955.
so all in all I'd put it into the 1950s drawer.

I think Western Germany is earlier than West German... 1950's. Others might know better. Technically, it might be a decanter, but it probably was intended only as a decorative object. It's nice, and looks to be in very good condition. That painting is likely cold painted and very fragile. Paint does not stick well to glass.

I would use a title something like "Western Germany White Opaque Glass Decanter with Hand Painted Landscape". I would avoid using the term "milk glass" as it may push it into the wrong category. Similarly "mid-century" would draw the wrong eyes. In the description be sure to mention the excellent condition of the gold and the landscape.

I doubt the sticker has anything to do with the decanter. And I suspect the decanter is Bohemian.

So do you think I should say Bohemian instead? Did you see the ones in the link I posted? Those are the only ones I could find that are somewhat similar in style. Now I'm confused lol

    no. not in this case.
after the UK induced their law about the origin markings to destroy their exports, all sorts of German markings were used.
especially in the Jugendstil era - 1890s to 1910s - there was a tendency that companies in the west along the Rhine were using "West/Western" to make a distinction from the rest of Germany. besides that they had manifold business relationships with France - just think of Villeroy & Boch - and a strong exchange of artists, designers etc. (Jean Garnier a.o.).
nonetheless practically all German companies did not stamp or imprint it into the product but only on the publicity papers and catalogues.

could be. it's easier to fake a sticker than the whole item. but why would they use "West" ?

That was my first impression, but then glass is not my forte.
Maybe the sticker was at the bottom of a box of vintage Bohemian and W. German glass and someone just stuck it on the nearest piece.

Thanks for the responses! So you guys think it's bohemian? I just don't want to describe incorrectly

I did make a mistake in assuming the sticker was original to the decanter. It does make more sense that this decanter is an earlier Bohemian piece. I guess I'm still a bit naive. Anybody have a bridge for sale?

because I handled a few that came in a mixed lot. especially these white ones and a few deep blue ones were later found to be German. can't remember the name of the company, but it seemed that it was an importer that sold those stuff as German, although it wasn't clear where he got them from.
(here I wonder a bit if it's not made for the Arab countries, because it has the form of a rosewater sprinkler.)

can't find the old pics. even looked on old harddisks. was a mixed lot of appr. 80 items sold by a widower. he simply wanted to get rid of it. some good stuff, French glass and antique Bohemian sttuff bought in good houses (Koller Zurich etc.) but also mediocre stuff like this here.
