Chris Roy Die With Memories, Not Dreams ...

    ***Hello Everyone!
Quick Story: My dad collected Antiques for over 50 years. As a kid, my dad had an Antiques Store. My dad is getting older and recently sold his house. The house was filled with his most precious finds: Chinese Potteries, Porcelains, Paintings, Etchings, Prints, Tobys, etc, and many many Antique and Rare Books (many signed) some book are as old as 1600's.

My dad gave me everything. I was the only kid so he wanted me to have all of his most precious treasures. I feel blessed. I will be posting a few things on here in the next few weeks in hope of getting a few more information on certain pieces. I still have 12 boxes of Antique books that are unopened so it will take me some time but will try to post the best finds on here. ***

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    About this piece:
    - Painting 10.5 x 13.5
    - Frame 13.5 x 17
    - Subject : Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmarte, Paris, France.
    - Artist : Unknown (DUMA? I believe there is a year on top of the name but could just be
part of the painting? Something else written under DUMA, can't identify.

Any insight on this piece would be greatly appreciated!

It might take a while, but here is a list of artists with that name (or close to it). You might have to look at thier works and compare signature or style. Duma Artists.jpg

I think "Paris" is written underneath.

Yes that's what I thought too at first , but not sure at all. Same thing with the name, seems there are letters missing (the "s" of Paris and I thought it could be Dumas or Dumais so "i" and "s" would be kind of hidden) however I don't think there is anything covered by the frame so it's puzzling lol.

Whoever did it wasn't shy about laying down the paint. A very hasty technique. Most likely a tourist picture.

Thanks for your input. I don't know much about paintings so it could very well be nothing important.

Quite a powerful impression. En grisaille with heavy impasto.

Not a proper stretcher, looks quite new, and loose canvas stapled in place. Points to tourist art. Maybe factory art.

    It's not an encouraging prognosis.

Yes quite possibly from the 70s is my guess. Oh well, I didn't expect much from that one anyways :) I will have many more to post, just need to find the time.

    Still from a reputable gallery.

Debora is correct on that one. After more research, I just found that Morency was celebrating it's 60th anniversary in 1966 so they were around for a long time and seem very reputable. But not sure how that work, I guess anyone could have had their painting framed by Morency? Capture.JPG

I also notice that in the list of artists on display from 1966, there is a Dumas in there, coincidence?

It appears they sold art supplies, framed and sold art. Here's a 1913 ad.

There is a Dumas on the list above but, unfortunately, no given name.

Thanks Debora! Encadreurs means "Framers" so I guess anyone could have used their services. But at least, now I can point out where the painting is from!

The (same) number on the label and frame would lead one to believe it's an inventory number.
