I recently acquired this sideboard from a local woman. She only said a friends parents brought it over from England maybe in the 40's. The piece is in great shape, as all drawers and doors move fluidly with original hardware. The drawers are all coated in a bright cherry red, and the painted birds/flowers are a bit raised. There are a few nicks on the top and corners which I'm considering having refinished at some point. I am not familiar with wax finishes and I'd be afraid of ruining it. This was a great freebie find and I really love the style. I'd be curious to know more about it? Tried some brief "googling" to no avail. Thanks in advance for your input :)

While it is of the same type of lacquered work found in Chinoiserie, the decoration looks more French to me. I doubt this was very old when brought over in the 40s.

It's quite pretty. My grandmother had an undecorated one that had the same shape and hardware. They're useful and hold a ton of stuff.

Whoa! I can't believe that whole set sold for only $500! It would've gone for a lot more in my neck of the woods.

    Hi,
I found my SIL one that same style and handles in mahogany. It was a perfect match to her dining room suite (table, chairs and hutch). Her husband was bitching about having to pay 75 dollars for it. He wanted to offer 15! I told him pay it. It is solid mahogany no veneer weighs a ton and not a ding on it besides the brasses are solid no plating.

The 75 was stealing as it was. These days people pay $300 for Ikea laminate and then have to assemble it. I'd rather have the mahogany.
