I think this is a moonstone, but just wanted to doublecheck.

That's what I would call it, but that's not much to go on.

What's the setting made out of? I'm seeing a glass opal, or what looks like one. If it's a gold-filled setting I'd put money on glass. Real moonstones generally don't end up in costume settings.

I also see markings on our left of the outer rim of the heart. It looks like 3 squares with the letters "VLM." The only jewelry related VLMs I could find were:
VLM Canada Wholesale Jewellery of Toronto.

and that VLM is a trademark of the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp that presumably makes jewelry products. I haven't a clue why their trademark is VLM. If you read the info on the following page it says: "The VLM trademark is filed in the category of Jewelry Products."

Looks moonstone to me. Those cabs aren't expensive.

Looks like opalescent glass to me, test it to be sure.

Not a moonstone. More like an opal -- whether real or fake.

It appears to me to be gold filled. My 10k acid is very old to try testing it, but it has that sheen of something better than plain old metal.

Don't have a tester to test the stone, so no go there.

I think I looked at that mark on the front under a loupe previously, and despite the fact that it really does look like a jewelry mark in the picture above, I think it's just scratch marks. However, I'll be sure to doublecheck that as soon as I get home.

I hadn't thought about it being glass - I figured it was either moonstone or opal though I don't see that white milkiness that I associate with opal...but wdik (not much!). Maybe I'll put it on a shelf until one day I can afford a tester. :)

Don't opals usually have more of a speckled or mottled appearance?

I had found an iridescent moonstone charm yesterday that had the same appearance as mine, but now I can't find the picture to compare it to again.

It's more like opalite glass than opal. It gets called "sea opal glass" too sometimes.

I just looked at it again under a loupe and those lines are just scratch marks, not a maker's mark. :)

I see a VLT on the top left of the heart in front or similar initials?

If it's glass, it might well have tiny bubbles under a loupe. Not opal, I agree.

Here's a few quick pics of a glass opalescent stone in a vintage pin. I have another pin around here with a heart shaped stone like the one in the OP's but this crown pin was in front of me for fast pics.

Trifari crown, or a clone? A lot of the original Trifari ones were sterling and had those nice opal glass cabs. The stones are replacements I think, if it's theirs. Those dumb glued stones always fell out.

This one is a clone. I've had several of the Trifari sterling ones but they sold long ago and my old pics are long gone. I'll try to find the set with the heart cab, it's in my 'to-list-someday' pile, or one of them anyway. :)
