Any ideas on this little brooch?. I know it’s not of value but I wondered if anyone could shed any light as to the meaning of the triangular bar and the ring?
I did wonder if it was Masonic?
    Any thoughts appreciated :) 401CF6FC-D890-430D-94BE-2378FE160EC9.jpeg 5D1177A0-8A11-4BEC-9A54-ACA457512B76.jpeg

    Neat !
Looks like it was scratched to check for gold content...
    Does the bar move ?
the pin & tube say it's an antique ....
    It's really thick...is it hollow??
    I see no masons markings...

Definitely unusual - but I'm not seeing masonic either.

Victorians had a thing for "machine" decor, after the foliate and naturalistic fashion.
I can't remember :bucktooth: if there is a specific name for this style, but I'll try to find other examples images.
Agree that the triangular bar isn't usual, but nothing Masonic here :)

The back sounds slightly hollow when tapped and the front sounds a bit cheap when tapped if you know what I mean. I agree the scratches on the back look like someone checking for Gold who doesn't care about damaging the piece. It was a metal detecting find so not surprised. I bought it as it tweaked my curiosity!
The bar and ring don't move at all.
Thanks for your input so far :)

Many 19th century brooches were hollow, sometimes filled with a kind of putty. It looks gold to me, 1880s maybe.

Probably gold filled. The testing on the back aren’t so bad, I have gotten pieces in lots with a big, deep filing right across the front

What about it being a secret society symbol of sorts?

It's a brooch / pendant.....so it was meant to be shown.....and if KSW is right ...worn...& lost.
But yes Gauntlet.....one would think that such a striking piece would be symbolic to someone.......rather than just a cool design !!

There are websites that have symbolism in Victorian jewelry. I don’t know how accurate they are.

Just come up with this :-0

'The upward moving triangle is sometimes called the blade (the chalice and blade figure ceremonially in many ritual magic operations). It is a symbol of aspiration or rising up, male force, and fire. It is purely phallic in origin. The triangle represents aspiration, rising force, and the male principal'
    !!

Some things may be better off remaining a mystery. :hilarious:

Lol, several websites say the triangle is the Holy Trinity and the circle is love. Take your pick.

Or could be a dry cleaning symbol for all I know!

Doesn't this one have strong modernist features (incredible prongs for the era!), mixed with celtic decor:

Yours is not a triangle, it is a triangular bar. Big difference.;)
    Don't worry, we'll get there.:hilarious:
