penang hokkien language adopted a lot of local malay words and bangku is one of them. i have always used it to refer to low stools but it is used for stools in general (only found out today :banghead::hilarious:)
penang hokkien is very different from the original hokkien dialect, so much so i sometimes have difficulty understanding real hokkien :wacky::p:facepalm:

Could it have been used for either the bride or the groom to sit or stand on during the wedding ceremony?

unlikely. a wedding foot stool would be like this, although only the really wealthy straits chinese would actually have one.

i was thinking more a novelty item just to decorate the newlywed's home.

actually the word "bangku" is originally a malay/indonesian word for bench/stool but it has become a penang hokkien word because we "stole" it :hilarious:
penang hokkien is the mishmash hokkien-malay spoken by the chinese who settled in Penang, Malaya (now Malaysia) :D

@journeymagazine good luck with the listing on eBay :)
