Looks to have some age. I really like the hand painted detail. Also was it perhaps at one stage mounted on a pedestal or something? (with the screw holes) Mahogany or Imbuia wood? Base is 27cm wide.Thank you and keep well

    The shallowness and the slopping sides remind me of a wooden powder dish. i have had a few with lids.

    Thanks for commenting. I will have a look into that. However is it not too big for a powder dish? It’s 25cm wide on top and just over 4cm deep.

    You are probably correct. I didn't even notice the size. I grew up with metric but spend the last 45 years with inches.

    I hear you. Maybe some kind of fruit bowl? Maybe it was footed at one stage?

    It’s not uncommon to have 4 holes in the bottom of a turned wooden bowl, from the faceplate on the lathe. Often they are filled in with a paste made of sawdust from the project and glue, but the plugs don’t always stay put.

    Beautiful bowl, I have to say! Is the outside lacquered or painted black, do you think?

    All I know for sure is that I like it.

    Thanks for the reply and info. Glad you also like it.

    Komo correctly noted and also commented on the lath holes. Personally I didn’t think the bowl was painted black or lacquered (but will inspect it again) It’s a very dark wood,or maybe there’s some kind of undercoat or varnish on it (will check) It does however have some light brown painted on the bottom around the base.

    The flowers are mainly yellow and red/orange,the leaves are a mixture (yellow,red,green and a little brown here and there) But over the dominant colour I would say is yellow.

    I think it could have been a tazza, so a shallow footed bowl. If so, the foot would have had a wide top, a bit wider than the holes you see.
    I like the shape. It is a charming folk piece imo, and certainly looks antique to me.

    Possible influence from German lands, but probably not made in Europe. A South African antique maybe?
    Never!:stop::)

    Much appreciated. Thank you for replying and for sharing your knowledge (as always) Glad you would think antique. I could not decide vintage or antique.

    I was also thinking maybe a South African thing. But folk piece as you say is a good description. Maybe made by a German hand in South Africa. I will do some more searching. Thanks again

    South Africa has a long enough European history to have its very own folk tradtion. It is just something I don't know anything about, I can only relate it to European folk art.
    I also don't know if there is much attention for this part of SA history, but with your eye for nice folk pieces, you could start an interesting collection.:)
