I’ve been trying to unravel the date of this ring by design and construction and not really got very far.
It’s just costume and in pretty sad state so this is just for my interest.
The gems are glass. The centre one is open backed and was foiled, the smaller ones on either side are closed back and darkened from damp/foil deterioration.
The band has a faint line all the way round as can just be seen in the photos. It is marked G.J or C.J which leads nowhere.
Please help me date this :)
    Thankyou!

Oh my...such a shame its in a bad state.
I m just as bad at dating rings as you are, I m afraid.
But my guess would be 1900-1920 ish because of the design and the stones.
Dont shoot me when I m wrong :bored:

I think you could compare the cut of the glass to that of diamonds.
I can't see if the central 'stone' has a visible culet or if the back is a sharp point? Maybe it is something like an old European diamond cut (with open culet), and 19th century?
Don't worry, we're safe on the jewellery forum.:) No firearms allowed.:stop:;)

Yes, it’s trashed but well worth the 50p’s worth of education for me :hilarious:
Nobody gets shot for making suggestions, I appreciate any input :)

    See, that’s smart!
I should have thought of that.
Dating jewellery needs Sherlock Holmes to put all the clues together.
There is a point underneath not a flat cullet.

Early twentieth copy or a little earlier of a precious stone design. My theory has always been these were made to be sold as engagement rings for those who couldn't afford the real thing.

When did diamonds change from flat cullet’s to pointy?

Medieval diamonds generally had points, because they were based on the octahedron shape of most rough diamonds.
When cutters began to experiment with ways to make the diamond reflect light better, they ended up creating the cullet.
But when it comes to later diamonds, I guess the perfect point was calculated by the brilliant;) Belgian Marcel Tolkowsky, in 1919. That is just a guess though, maybe @stracci knows?:)

Of course @Any Jewelry , you are correct!
The modern round brilliant cut replaced the old European cut around 1919. I think there may have been quite a bit of overlap, because transitional diamonds were cut for some time afterwards.
A transitional is a mixture of both cuts.
I have a transitional that looks like an Old European cut, but with no culet.
It's a fun subject! Here's an informational article on cuts.

And old diamonds were reused as well. Which I like, because I like old cut diamonds.

Isn't it about time we revived our 'old cut diamond' thread btw? @stracci , weren't you the one who started it?
So many of us love them, and it is great for research and reference. (As long as we don't get too many Superman brooches.:playful:)

Old cut diamonds are the best! I love them! And also, people usually only know modern cut diamonds so these old cut diamonds are far more easily to find for cheap than modern ones.:)

    True.
And old cut diamonds don't score high on the modern 4 C's*, because they were selected and cut for a different purpose than modern diamonds.
No high 4 C score, no high value. Except to us collectors of antique jewellery.

    * The 4 C's are Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat.
    I have a 5th C, for 'don't Care'.:D

Yes, I started that one. It was a fun thread!
So many of us who collect antique jewelry have old cuts. I would love to see more.
I'm working on taking some new pictures of my old cut diamonds and I will revive that thread soon!
