Needlepoint?

Couldn't resist. I purchased this at a consignment store for $30.00 It is framed. Measures 10" x 16". I have no clue as to its origin other than maybe its Spanish. I am also clueless about who or what the gentlemen is.

 

A closer view of the letters both to his left and to his right might help identify. I see one letter than looks like Greek but it might also be a P, so a better view is called for.

 

I think it might be Latin as well.

 

NOT needlepoint, some type of embroidery.
Can we see some close-ups of the stitches, front AND back?

 

I also have a hunch this person may have been a religious figure. Looks like a halo around his head.

Well, that letter I thought might be Greek, looks even more like the Greek phi in the closer version. Can we see a close up of the letters on the ribbon on his other side please?

 

Your right it could be Greek, but is clothing looks Spanish

 

Agree, Greek or Slavic. There are parts of the Balkans where men wear such straw hats in summer, and a similar costume, only not red. Artistic licence?
