That’s why I think it’s Mexican. I feel strongly it would be 925 if Asian but if Mexican it should be stamped w Mexican stamps. It looks Mexican…

This is one of the general context things I have been looking for what to look for in grades of silver. Thank you both.

Have you viewed this list? https://www.925-1000.com/a_Standards.html

The standards list is very good, but incomplete. Mexico, for instance, used a whole range of finenesses, including 950.
It is very difficult to have an overview of finenesses worldwide, but I hope they will add some more to the list.

Right off the top not listing Mexico for 950 is a glaring omission. IMO the piece cannot be listed as Mexican but between it’s construction, coloration, silver content etc. it’s Mexican.

I've seen other stamped pieces here with Mexico and 950, so I know you are right.

As is not listing India for 1000. It is one of the things older India silver is famous for, especially filigree.

But making a comprehensive list is difficult, and if only one person compiles it, it depends on the focus of that person's interest. The compiler does recognize it is far from complete and it is still a work in progress.

I agree. Though not definitive, it is helpful for someone like me. I try to research things before I present them here. If the silver content tells me possible countries to look into for the source, then I can better define my Google search.

It is helpful for all of us, as long as we recognize that it is a work in progress.
Some of us have had a hard time convincing others that a certain fineness was indeed used in a country, even though it wasn't on the list.:hilarious:

I see 850. Doesn't Europe use an 850 silver mark?

I agree. It's not clear what it says.

My guess is it's a factory piece; the artisans put the full marks on theirs, but factories usually just do the fineness mark and Mexico.
