.The one above is not mine.!

Mine is in my hand and virtually identical.....but cleaner, and while no brush...:(:(:(...the ink sponge is still there and hale !

There's a mark under the lid, and I'd like to bring it out , and clean up 140 years of gunk...without ruining the patina..... ( though it was bronze at first....but Japanese metals are so warm....)

So, are we happy with the circa Meiji era ..... and how best to spruce it up ????

    ( when it's cleaner , I'll show the mark...it may mean sum-thing to somebody ...:wideyed::hungry:)

I'll take on all comments with welcome abandon .....:woot::woot::woot:

Ps. the antique store was asking 200.....but no !!....at 100 I was willing to take it home...so I paid up !
I also got a nice Inuit carved stone bird.....for another C note , ( down from 175..) ...but I made out well on that....for resale.....or most likely as a keeper......she's so cute !

So, I hadn't even heard of one before and had to look it up!! Always something new to learn here!!! VERY NEAT!!!

https://www.newpentrace.net/east/yatate/index.html Good images about half way down the page.......

If yours too is made of brass or copper or.....?, which I believe is pretty sturdy stuff, cleaning shouldn't be too difficult!! A bit of "Brasso" might not hurt it, IMHO, but if you're more comfortable waiting for others to chime in, then by all means, @komokwa, then wait!!

well, I don't want to polish it.....just loosen the grime...which around the well should be old ink build up..

I don't agree... I consider, for myself, alcohol is prophylactic... And if you catch some "bug" ;) it is therapeutic!:p:joyful:

It can be for many people. But with my meningeal problems due to the last vaccination a few years ago, I have had to stop drinking alcohol.:bigtears: To think I am an officially certified wine adviser.;)
Ah well, there is always chocolate.:hungry::playful: And it is truffle season now.

She's actually an olive green with blue highlights...

I've always loved this stone but even more when the blue is stronger.
A lot of Inuit birds have small feet....and some never stand solid...but this girls feet look like a Hobbits !!!

    She's about 8 1/4 x 7 x 2 1/2 inches.....no damage

She's signed...in the smallest of ways by Paul Tuckpani....who at one point was more sought after than he is today....or so I'm told by @Mark London .......:p

I don't know either.....STILL VERY COOL, komo!!!! But I like the top orientation better...... EDIT!!!! My eye JUST caught that BOTH images are pretty much the same way, but they're a bit different....the first one I edited, the LOWER image, I thought looked like a bird's head, looking off to the left....STRANGE what the eyes do!!!! I see more of a lower case "f" script letter with a 'chevron' to the right in the top image!!!
