    hi folks

this was my second local auction win, came to £3 with fees

was looking on ebay and some of these unmounted cameos sell for absolute peanuts in groups, some sell well

this one i think is very generic, and uninteresting.

but thought it was nicely done

wondering if the cameo was of anyone in particular, or not

    any thoughts appreciated

One looked quite nice in the advertised picture

    They only show 1 picture

But knew straight away when I saw them today they were dot prints

Cost £11 but should get that back from the frames, that are quite nice

By default the lady is usually considered to be Flora, although whether or not the cutter had any such thing in mind other than a pretty lady wreathed in flowers ...

Helmet shell, Italian, middle third of 20th century or so.

Thanks for the info bronwen, guess I got what I paid for then :)

Still think it's nicely carved though

Maybe doesn't rise to the level of 'museum quality', but quite respectable, especially for the price.

Thank you, I'll take that :)

The auction house had a few of them unmounted, do ya reckon people are taken them out for the purpose of scrapping the mountings ?

I don’t know a lot about modern Japanese wood blocks but the colors on the one on left look WAY off for any I have seen that are older. Clearly you already know it’s no good but I’m learning more and more recently how important colors are in Asian art. In all all old art but particularly in Asian art. Certain pigments weren’t even around at certain times so there is that but in general just what is right and wrong for a time and place are very important to keep an eye on. On another note I sold a loose vintage cameo for around $25-$40 or so this year. It was by a known family, signed, and a unique shape so I’m sure that lended to the sale but hope isn’t lost to make a small profit there.

I took the prints out of the frames, and they are actually cut from a blooming calender of all things, so they are prints of very well established works

So colours are true to the original pieces

In one way that's quite a good sign that I spotted a good image

Too bad they were calender cut outs :)

Yes, ever since the price of gold got so high it has been happening quite a bit. It breaks my heart when some beautiful carving gets damaged due to this practice.

Strangely enough I think they look beautiful out of their settings

Just a bit rather downright disrespectful to the centrepiece which is supposed to be the real focus, not the bloody mount !

I have always been happy to buy unset cameos when they are something I like/find interesting, precisely because they cost less. I've always said I collect cameos, not mounts. Cameos in silver don't do much of any better than unmounted ones, so have picked up many I considered bargains that way too.

Just because it’s a reproduction of an old piece which I assumed it was, it doesn’t mean they got the colors right. I could certainly be wrong and they could have matched the colors exactly but it doesn’t look right to me based on the woodblocks I’ve seen and own. I’m just barely above a total novice though. I’d be curious to see an original if you have a name of the piece or a link. My comment was more just a general idea that I’m just now trying to tune into more specifically. 98% of the time it’s pretty easy to tell if something is new or old based on a myriad of things including color. On copies that are made to fool or could easily fool is where minute changes in proper colors would be a really good thing to be aware of. Maybe one day I will be!
