    I almost bought a piece of black pottery today, but it was Mexican and the seller wanted high dollars. I left it in the box I found it in.

    I was going through a cardboard box of trash from the garage of the latest clearance, damp paper and books, old scissors, oil-can, pencils etc and found this metal book cover.
    It looked silver so I brought it home, badly tarnished and covered in paint.

    I saw a Birmingham hallmark dated 1908, so I commenced cleaning it up.

    Pure acitone on a Q-tip for the paint and ammonia on the dirt and tarnish.

    A quick silver polish and I have a very nice Art Nouveau plaque with cherubs.
