    I'd guess they're either growing into, or out of, the ground. That tree stump appears to be a mostly transformed bird.

    The guy on the right is an angel , who, placing his wings on the stump, is now becoming one with the wood.

    On the left the guy is gathering bricks, and in so doing , is becoming one with the earth !

    The one with the bricks is "The Construction (Building) of Peace".
    The one with the wing is "The Dream of the Hero".

    (I knew listening to Italian folk music would pay off.)
