Hi everyone! I have some family members who were hit hard by hurricane Ian. They’re going through the claims process now and they have a BEAUTIFUL Stanley Furniture Esagonale Dining Table that is no good now :( There is very little information about this table online, and I can’t find a price or estimate anywhere. We know it was purchased in 2011 by the previous owners of the house, but they don’t have the receipt and don’t remember how much they paid for it. Does anyone happen to know what this table is actually worth (or ballpark)? Any similar tables and brands we could compare it to? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is a link to an archived version of the Stanley Furniture website for this table:

    Thank you in advance!

Regardless of how much it cost new, insurance companies will see it as "used" furniture and probably wont pay a fraction what it might be worth. I know when we were burgled they didnt pay a fraction for what was taken. Also,we would say "X is worth $500" and they would want proof of why we chose that figure. Its a lovely table, and Im sorry their home was damaged.

Thank you for the insight, that definitely makes sense. We were told to get the price for things (or as close to it as possible) and submit those and the insurance company will surely knock the numbers the down. But if we don’t provide something they’ll just use generic prices for things in their database. Any idea idea if the ballpark for the table is closer to $500 or $5000? Judging by what I see online with full Stanley Furniture dining sets for sale, I’d guess it’s probably closer to $500. But the Stanley Furniture dining chairs that they have with this table were ~$1300 each when new.

And for what it’s worth, sorry to hear you were burgled, and that the insurance company wasn’t much help. The people we’ve been dealing with all seem way more reasonable than we were expecting, but we’ll see how things go once everything is submitted.

There's an entire Stanley Esagonale dining set on E-Bay right now. They're asking 4K for the entire set, including a buffet and chairs, although I'm not sure that the chairs actually belong to the set. So I'd estimate that new the table would be around $2K. Since nice dining sets are out of fashion right now, I'd say that you should expect much less.

On the other hand, if you say $2000 and they knock you down to $500, it's better than saying $500 and having them say $200. I'd then take that $500 and go somewhere like a ReStore (if you have such - Habitat for Humanity thrift shops) and buy a whole set for that $500. If everyone else in the area hasn't had the same idea and beaten you to it.

@Ghopper - You’re right! I scrolled right past that listing because the first image wasn’t a table. Thanks for mentioning that. That’ll do as a reference point.

@evelyb - That’s a great idea, I’ll mention it to them. Even if they did get whatever it was worth to begin with, they wouldn’t be able to find one to replace it. Might as well see if they can salvage it.

Thanks again! I honestly wasn’t expecting such quick responses. I’ll follow up with the result of all this in case it ends up helping someone else (if I can remember).

@frosty123 - I had to itemize my parents' home after Hurricane Katrina. I quickly photographed everything in every drawer and cabinet because the mold was so toxic. Their policy covered $50k of possessions. The adjuster told me I'd have to list ALL of their items because insurance only factors about 1/3 the actual value, so I had to come up with $150k in personal losses for their home. They actually did lose that much, lost nearly everything, so it wasn't a problem but very very tedious. They were very elderly and could never even return to see their damaged home. I wound up selling the house cheap in as is condition and because I'd counted every book and q-tip, they wound up receiving a settlement with that sale price equivalent to what they would have received had they sold the house undamaged. Good you are helping your parents with this.

Blimey, do you guys not do proper new for old insurance in the USA? Here, any decent policy is meant to put you back in the position you were in before the incident. And also, you insure for proper value here, so if it's worth 50K that's what you insure for and get.

Dearest, have you missed the news for the last 3 decades ? Insurance denies Americans life saving medicines, they have no compunctions about denying you the value of a lifetimes possessions .So sad,but true.

That's if you're lucky enough to be able to afford the insurance. Government based stuff doesn't cover a lot of medically required procedures or medications.

Sadly, no not at all but we pay insurance like it's for that! And they want you to THINK that! They CALL IT THAT, but it's not exactly that. Mine is called "replacement value insurance" but it's not that at all and they only give me $50k of that. Trust me when I tell you that even a small home has more than $50k of possessions. You must be able to show receipts for purchase. And...then there is depreciation that follows. Which seems fair when you think about it, but not fair when you go to rebuy the lost item and it's 3x the price and less than half the quality.

So true, but I've found other ways to obtain my meds for little or next to nothing. There are programs for people who don't quite qualify for free specialty pharmacy meds. I am very grateful for these programs.

If you're referring to the healthcare marketplace...
It all depends on the plan one picks, one really has to put some time and effort into researching and choosing correctly. I chose/had a decent, and relatively affordable, Silver plan through the marketplace that I was pleased with.
Many people were going through insurance brokers instead of purchasing through the marketplace directly. These brokers were luring in customers by "finding" them cheap(er) plans... with poor coverage.
Back when I was in homecare, I remember delivering a CPAP machine to a customer. He was absolutely livid that he had a 50% co-pay on the device and complained profusely about "Obamacare". He lived in a 4000sq/ft home in an affluent suburb and had taken a Bronze health plan that turned out to have minimal coverage because "that's the plan the insurance guy recommended".
NOTE: The lower the "metal level" of the plan, the lower your monthly payment is... but the higher your costs are when you use medical services.
(EDIT: And within each metal level there are differences between plans. IE: Two Silver plans may have the same monthly cost but one has better office visit and procedure coverage while the other has better drug coverage, etc, etc.)
Never get a Catastrophic plan unless you are healthy and in your 20s.
(EDIT: The pricing is also based on income. Someone who earns $30,000/year will pay less for the exact same plan than someone who earns $100,000/year.)
Caveat: My own experience with the marketplace is from ten years ago... I have no experience with what it's like now, but I've heard from a few users that it's actually better than it was.

I suspect you can guess my views on healthcare.

Himself had bowel cancer some years back, detected by NHS routine screening. World class care: our local hospital is rated in the top ten in the world. Check ups and follow ups for years after. Cost at point of delivery? Zero.

California friend had pancreatic, didn't survive. Very good care. BUT. Even with her husband's supposedly excellent insurance, it still cost them $10K for drugs.

The most you can pay here for drugs, in England, is £108.10 for a full year's worth. Wales and Scotland, no charge.

I have a zero co-pay for drugs in the plan, but I qualify for government-based insurance based on disability/earnings level. But... lots of Dental stuff isn't covered at all, and the dentists who take the insurance are not the good ones.
