I was wondering if anyone could give any info on this painting I have come across. The back of the canvas is quite old and faded but on the frame it says made in Mexico. I have searched online but am still unable to fully see who the artist is as the signature is unclear. Any help or ideas would be great.

Very likely to be a copy. Have you done an internet image search? "Made in Mexico" is usually a clue that a painting is decorative.

The painting is lovely, I don't know anything about it. There was an influx of frame moldings shipped in from Mexico from about 1975-1989ish, stamped with Mexico on the back. They were lovely, simple, high quality, custom molding frames.

    Welcome to the forum, MSN.
It has a Pre-Raphaelite feel, so that may be something to look into. Likely a copy, like the others said.

Hi all. Thanks so much for all the welcomes and information. It is always great to understand values of items, but I just love knowing the stories behind things, like who it was and where it originated from.. I have very limited knowledge of this industry which is why I made the post.

To answer a few of the questions:

1- The signature is not that clear but I will add a photo for you.
2- I have tried Google image search a few times and there are no results other than a few water color paintings nothing like this though.
3- I will try and add a photo of the back/frame. The is a small sticker on the frame with the number 20 hand written on it. There is almost a fabric edge to the front of the frame. The back of the canvas has had newer additional stables put in and a hanging cord attached. Many of the original staples are much older and smaller.

I was trying to look for similar online to guess an ages based on the style of dress but that also seems a challenge.

Thanks again for all the info.
    :)

Rosenstein? Agree with anti's info about frame and think painting is contemporary to it. Don't think this is a factory painting but could be a copy of a famous work. Otherwise, someone working in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The signature might end with -stine, -stein, or -sten. Starts with R and has no letters with a "tail" going below the base line of the writing.

    That's all I've got...

Something so familiar about that painting. The clothing appears to be mid-Victorian.

I think it could be a painting of a detail from some famous painting that I am not familiar with. If it's a portrait in its own right, it's a very nice one.

Greatly flawed though by the artist's struggle to depict the arm and hand at the correct proportion and angle.

I also found this random small painting this weekend at a house clearance shop. It was under a pallet of mirrors and had been there ages as was really damp. It’s a shame the frame has water damage as I quite like the small size of it.
