my research tells me this is what is called a pine cone Third eye.
made from a slice of a pine cone. Another yard sale .50 cent item.
Hoping someone can tell me what the reddish purple stone is?

Star ruby, based on your second photo.
Does it show a star in a single light source?

It looks like a star ruby to me.
If you take it out in the sun, or shine a pen light on it, a star may be seen floating across the surface, like in this photo. Try holding the light about 8 inches from the stone.

    Thank you very much @stracci

Hmmm, I'm surprised there is no star. Well, it depends if it was cut correctly to show a star.
However, I'm confident it is a ruby, based on the hexagonal silky structure.

It's made from a pine cone called knobcone.

Nice piece. If it were mine I would have the stone put in a ring. In your 2nd photo there appears to be a "ghost" crystal deeper in the crystal. I,ve seen one other, where the crystal was cut across the length with the original x'l was smaller and enclosed by subsequent growth. It looks like an natural amethyst. It is unusual (rare) to have a stone that is cut and polished such.
