Satsuma, what do the numbers mean on the bottom?

    Batch numbers, design numbers, painters marks etc. This is another of the Chinese pseudo satsuma pieces though, so not technically satsuma, but in the style of satsuma.

    oh its chinese? How can you tell? It looks like its marked as an export piece would be.

    It's from the style and the glazes, they have to put a cream base glaze on the material to make it look more correct. Satsuma pottery is self coloured, look at the base on this which is white. Also there isn't any genuine crazing.

    so the real satsuma looks white underneath or on the bottom but does not have the glaze?

    Real Satsuma pottery body is cream/biscuit, the pottery is self coloured. It can have a clear overglaze or be unglazed but either way it is a cream or biscuit colour. Decorative glazes on the body can be any colour of course.

    then is this one also not genuine satsuma?

    Correct, that one also isn't genuine Satsuma. It is possibly Japanese though, looks like some form of hybrid moriage ware using satsuma style decoration.
