Featured Small Buttocks Basket

This is a small basket, about 6 x 5 inches and 5.25 inches tall. Has some loss on both sides where the handle meets the top rim, still feels very tight and sturdy.
I am wondering about age and origin, and also a few spots where it looks like there is a string like material tied around the wider handle and top ribs - see photos marked in green. is this just for strengthening, is it normal? Does it point to any particular region where the basket was made?

Interesting shape (probably has a specific name) Looks well made and at least vintage (in my opinion) Also,Iam sure have seen that type of twine on older baskets before. Looking forward to hear and learn what other more knowledgeable members say.

Edit: Ha ha,so it’s really called a Buttocks basket. I thought you were making a joke (I will just keep quiet now and learn something new)

As the twine is covered by the splints woven in later, I would assume it is original, used to secure the hoops after they were shaped. The hoop splints (for the rim and handle) would be bent into rings while somewhat damp and flexible, but would have to be held in that shape until they were set and dry.

Buttocks basket......yup that's a real name !
Oak splint, circa 1900....Pennsylvania , but could be a little higher or lower up or down the east coast of the USA...
Used for collecting eggs , as the deep bulbous base held the eggs secure from rolling all over the basket.
Larger ones were used for market shopping as well.
Some loss where handle meets the rim.
The more and tighter the ribs the finer the basket ....

This is a nice example..
They are woven pretty tight, and this one ...with it's proper damage , shows many years of loving use...

The term Appalatchian.....will help a search...

they get misidentified...as a buttocks basket.........often.

Well....ummm.....there's a little more to it than just that.....

The ' wedgie ' is not always so pronounced...
The Appalachian basket will have that extra top rim ...!!!!!!
whereas the Mellon will be likely a of 1st Nations mfg...specially if it has a base, which would then be Cherokee ... like this white oak....

I have several, and sold many more......
but, likely....I've made a mistake or two along the way...!
