    Lemon juice will bubble on the shell itself, but not on the nacre, which is what we see here. (Assuming it is pearl or mop)

    As kyra said, any acid can damage calcium containing materials like shells or coral, so always clean it off immediately after testing and rub some oil on it. If you soak shells in lemon juice, they will dissolve.:eek:
