This is an oil on canvas illustration by Thomas Fogarty (1873-1938). I would like to find the book/story/magazine it illustrates. Any help would be appreciated. CCE958D1-8088-472C-B003-DCDA6D5C4FB2.jpeg

That link does not state that.

Also, the Pinterest image is the same image as OakandThistle's post.

Whether it said that specifically, the large font for Rockwell and the tiny font for Fogarty certainly implied that to me. I did think it very un-Rockwell like. My primary search term was Fogarty and when I saw that the image was the same as Oak and Thistle's, I figured I would ask the signature question.

    What more can OakandThistle add?

Interestingly, he was Anne Fogarty's father-in-law, at least for a while. Identifying the source of illustrations is always a bit of a challenge because could be a book or a magazine, and back in the day (as I'm sure you know,) there were many, many magazines and many of the titles were published with great frequency. You can find a list of the books he illustrated on abebooks.com with search words "Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty." And he did do work for Scribner's. You can find some issues with a Google More: Books search.

Sorry, forgot to ask the obvious questions. Where did you get the painting? What were you told about it? Is it signed? Is there anything on the back?

One of many purchased on eBay . Yes it is signed … lower left. The back has a thick fiberboard dust cover screwed down with corners cut off... but from what I can see there is nothing on the back … I guess that’s next. 6974119C-74CF-4EEF-B3AD-37C58A06879A.jpeg

I asked seller if they knew the illustration without success

The headline NR was certainly unintended. It was several trays ago I put it out. I’ll see what I can.

Solved that.. deleted it! Now, back to the illustration. Place and time? Looks to be American 1910-30. Agreed? This would help ID book. Subject: landlord? About to evict? Other thoughts?

Your assessment of time and place is fair.

Also, he is not intimidated, and his ear seems to have a point, perhaps the devil collecting on a bargain?

The man’s hat was popular as a boater hat in the 10s but was more fashionable in the 20s. My guess is a depression era story maybe written in the mid to late 30’s.

I’m not! Fogarty was known for his illustrations; this looks like an illustration; if I don’t find it, I’ll probably still not know. If I find it … voilà!
