Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone had ever seen one of these before and curious about authenticity. Was told that it was a Swedish calendar with holidays and days marked with the year being 1787. Was purchased at a garage sale in Minnesota and the person selling didn't know what it was.
At this stage, I know absolutely nothing,
so any detail would be appreciated.

looks like a pencil box,,,,,,or drafting box......for school..
but I don't know the size, or the metal to guess at it's age....
but 1787.....seems a bit early for the block letters....imo

The design looks more 1897 than 1787.

Don't see anything to say Swedish. That which I can read looks English to me. The alphabet goes only A to G before repeating. All those other little motifs in there. Maybe a code if you know how to read it. Maybe a rebus. I think a combination of not clearly struck and worn. A curiosity.

There is a crown similar to some used in Sweden. Nothing else about it is Swedish.

I'd say @LauraGarnet02 has ID'd the box. You've got the months on the one end, and the sequence A to G is seven letters for the days of the week. The little icons indicate holidays. And I guess there must be a lot of similarities between Swedish and English.

Yours is badly struck and barely legible. I have no idea how to determine its age.

I posted this excerpt after an exhaustive day, my sleep interupted by what sounded like a sonic boom, only to hear several others, checking outside to find police cars gathering at what appeared to be rather large party a block away, complete with pyrotechnics. So was a bit tired, and unclear in supporting what LauraGarnet02 found with information from an 1885 book, mentioning tobacco boxes found with that '1787' date and also '1812', and giving clear indication that they are Swedish and not a seller 'fantasy' - the link to the older runic calendar just for example (Nordic runic calendars are easily searched).

Personally, have little reason to think that the OP's worn box is a reproduction or fake...
