Is there a style descriptor / name for these pieces of Black Japanese Pottery? I have a lamp and a vase. The black is low sheen matte and the design is all handpainted. I looked online and couldn't find anything similar that had actually sold but did find a couple of auction records where the lot was passed. One had an estimate of $100-200 and the other $400-600. Are either of those values realistic?

The lamp is about 22" high with the pottery portion being 12". The vase is 13" high. The lamp was in my wife's family at least back to the 1950s and the vase was acquired about 10 years ago. I'm thinking they're from the early twentieth century.

Are you sure it is pottery? It looks like lacquer, possibly on brass. Could you show us where the black is worn, so we can see the base material?
It is lovely, and I agree, early 20th.

Definitely pottery - it is thick like pottery, weighs like pottery and sounds like pottery when you hit it. The "Made in Japan" impression on the bottom also looks like an impression into clay. There are no worn spots that show anything other than black so the clay may be black.

I don't know of a specific name for this type of item. The prices you mention seem unrealistic, but with a clean, rewire and a nice shade it may well appeal enough to someone to sell for a reasonable amount. Date wise it is likely 1930's or 1950's, may even nudge into the 60's.

The bottom would suggest Tokanabe although usually stippled and heavily textured, I think that’s what you have.
