Hello fellow antiquers, I have a new one for you! My mother in-law found this dish at local estate sale. Surprisingly the seller did not know much about it and neither do we. I will be getting better quality images this evening and will post them here asap. But this is what I have for now.

If anyone could help in anyway IMG-20220718-WA0010.jpg IMG-20220718-WA0010.jpg IMG-20220718-WA0014.jpg , it would be greatly appreciated!

    All the best,
    Jonny

Latvian silver marks, 875 is the silver fineness, the crowned head from 1922-1939.
Not sure we have any Latvian speaking members for translation of the inscription.

I was looking and that trying to figure out why I couldn't "crack" into it ... it's in one of the Baltic languages, you dimwit...:p:p:p The inscription says 1931, which is as far as I can get. Odds are it was engraved close to the date of manufacture.

Wonder how it escaped the marauding and notoriously light-fingered soldiers of the era. Maybe it didn't, which is how it eventually fetched up at an estate sale?

As far as I know the only Baltic person we have on Antiquers is Erik, but he is Estonian.
Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language, part of the Urallic language family. Latvian is a Balto-Slavic language, part of the Indo-European language family. So there is no way they are mutually intelligible.

I can't see the letters very well, but there could be a small chance that the inscription is in Russian, so I'll tag @Aznathalie .:)
It may take some time for her to appear, because most members stay away because the certificate situation still isn't sorted, so we'll have to be patient.

Hm. I'm thinking it's actually in Lithuanian? I've friends from there and some of those accents look very similar.

Latvian and Lithuanian are closely related, both Balto-Slavic languages.

Both suitable for making my brain crazy, since it expects to be able to figure them out and obviously can't.

I can't even figure most of the letters out. I keep seeing words ending in -stra, which is how many Frisian surnames end, so Frisian is interfering with the few letters I do recognize.:wacky:

It wants to make sense, but doesn't. If it was printed instead of engraved maybe I could hack something out, but handwriting in a language I don't know...oy.

The inscription is not in Russian. Image of a Latvian girl in a national costume. As on the coin of 1931.

    I could only translate this
War Minister Award Besleman Batempt. Get well Jason

    Translation according to Lingva Translate:
"The inscription is not in Russian. Image of a Latvian girl in national costume. Like on a 1931 coin.

    I could only translate this
Award of the Minister of War Besleman Batempt. get well jason"

Thanks @Aznathalie . Possible Russian was just a stab.
So it could be something a wounded soldier received from the Minister of War?
