Hi, I'm not sure what to make of this what I assume is a print of a tobacco plant. It has a white background and a gold hand painted border. The glossy black behind it is interesting too. Also on the back is what I think may be old wallpaper, though it sort of looks like watercolor too. It measures 11.75" by 9.75." I guess the gold frame would be gesso. As you probably gather I don't know much about artwork so I am hoping someone can help me with this as far as technique, age, and any other helpful information. Thanks ahead of time for any tips or leads.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The frame and framing seem very interesting... unusual.

The me, the color of the print appears to be faded. The leaf color seems more blue than it should, for example. I might not be right. It is hard to tell from photos sometimes.

    I do like botanical prints!

The leaves are also narrower than the smoking kind. Nicotiana of the decorative kind perhaps? Is there something on the print indicating that that plant is supposed to be tobacco?

The print may have come out of an old set of encyclopedias or botanical book and the hand painted art work around the plant may have been to cleverly hide the wording at the bottom. The wall paper on the back was probably just a handy sturdy backing.

Thanks everyone. I didn't know there were decorative or ornamental tobacco plants. No, there is nothing to indicate it is even a tobacco plant but it was the closest I came to with a Google photo search. Putting all of the elements of it together, it's a quirky little piece so of course it appealed to me instantly.
