Help with Paul Girardet Engraving.

Discussion in 'Art' started by Richard Arthur, Jan 20, 2018.

  1. Over the years I have sold a few Paul Girardet engravings. This particular engraving I have never come across. It is of artist Jean Pierre Alexandre Antigna painting A Quoi Tient L'Amour. Is anyone familiar with this engraving, or at least seen another one? My research has stagnated at the British Museum. Though they describe the engraving scene there is no image.

The bottom left reads Peint par Antigna. The bottom right reads Grave Par Paul Girardet pa 1.jpg

The Saxonia says it's 61cm by 46cm and 1845. There seems to lettering under the image that differs from yours.

The British museum says 71cm by 49cm and 1872

    How large is your print?

If you've sold other Giradet prints, then your pricing should be consistent with those.

  8. Moreotherstuff the print is 71cm by 49cm. Paul Girardet prints are all over the map price wise. I have sold some for as little as $60.00 The subject and painter make a big difference.

Given the size. it's probably safe to say you have the Goupil print.

I found the image as a wood engraving, but I don't think that's relevant - not your print.

I did find an entry that said a facsimile of the Girardet engraving of Antigna's "Labor of Love" (a reasonable translation) was issued in 1877 as a heliotype. I've never knowingly handled a heliotype so I wouldn't know how faithful such a facsimile might be.

From The American Bookman 1877 (vol. 3):

I suppose it's encouraging that the image has been reproduced so many times, and in so many ways.

    Mr. Arthur-

I have the same print measuring 27" X 18 3/4" with a variant of the frame - mine is all gilt.

I have photos but was unable to upload as they are too large - I can send one to you if you like.
