3 big oriental pottery vases

hi folks

these aren't mine, but they are in a local antiques shop near me

cant seem to find anything like them online

red with a black wash (darker than pictured, unglazed, with characters in relief

feels/looks like pottery, but perhaps not

marked as garnitures (£120)

2 matching vases (with different characters), and a lidded jar

anyone have an idea what they are ?

 

Charlie, do an internet search and look at Japanese tree bark pottery. I don't have time to look it up before I speak, so sorry if I am wrong and it's a wild goose chase.

Those are Totai Shippo vases, in a completely different league and not comparable to Charlies items.

Never heard of such before !!

 

They are low grade slip cast pieces, mid 20th century. I see them around from time to time. They were inexpensive in their day and are very hard to sell now, if you were thinking of buying I would advise not to.

I accidentally found another name for this black stippled Japanese pottery while I was searching for something else.
Tokanabe Ware.
