Featured Large silver brooch, please help identify design and age!

    I agree, one part is MIA, it would have been symmetrical.

    That’s correct, it looks like it should’ve had one small panel, I can see the remaining of metal.
    I looked at similar ones and found mourning and Etruscan revival, but this one seems a bit different in design. It also screams to me that it may have been a gents brooch.
    What are your thoughts on that?

    My thoughts exactly, when I first seen it…. Religious, priests, gents.
    After reading the article posted by @Aznathalie , it looks as it goes well back to early Victorian.

    Puts me in mind of jewellery regarded as having been inspired by Halley's comet.
