I'm looking for glass penny licks, they have been on my bucket list for a while but I haven't found any or any going for a reasonable price. I'm also looking for printed or impressed stoneware flagons of London brewery names or south east brewery prints on them or printed stoneware ginger beer bottles for my collection. Thanks.
"Penny lick" is new to me. I looked it up and there are pics online, but perhaps you have some photos of your own to illustrate?
Penny Licks are glasses shaped like an egg cup. They had ice cream in them they were sold to poor children for a penny which was just a lick of ice cream and the the glass was returned, hence the name, a lick of ice cream for a penny. Here is a photo
I had to look up penny lick glasses as well. A disturbing story in the Age of Covid ! https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/penny-lick-ice-cream
Thanks for that little read. There were many unhygienic things of the Victorian times and before then. I'm just looking for a couple for my Victorian kitchen.
It might be easy to confuse one of these with an eye wash glass. That might be another avenue to search.
I sold around 100 of those in the 90's My ex wifes family were Italian ice cream makers. This Bradford Jowett was donated to local transport museum.
Atlas Obscura (under their Gastro Obscura subdivision) recently put out a nice article on Penny Licks, with lots of pix too. Was my first time hearing about them. (Growing up in decidedly post-Victorian Los Angeles, no surprise!) Enjoy! https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/penny-lick-ice-cream
